Unidentified kitchen objects

Can you help me here? I came across this picture in a collection of galley kitchens a little while ago. The more I look at it the more confused I am – what are those clamp like things on that left hand counter? Are they instruments of torture, possibly?

The Modern House

The strange thing is I have a feeling in the back of my mind that I should recognize them. My brain is making connections with sea food – cracking giant crabs, perhaps? Or maybe it’s a faint memory from that alien abduction episode … I really would be grateful for any enlightenment!

You’re probably well aware that there’s a bit of a “taxidermy” trend going on in interiors – I’ve being seeing heads of deer and other animals in all sorts of rooms. But I haven’t seen one of these until now:

Now that’s got to beat any dead animal decoration there is, right? This hungry visitor attempted to drop in on a group of scientists visiting Svalbard – they were preparing cauliflower soup, perhaps the bear is a vegan?

I won't go until I've got some ...

The photos of the bear, by Andy Rouse, are awesome. What with the disappearing sea-ice and the tough time the bears are having as climate warming changes the world around them, you can see that this fellow is really hungry.

Please?

I don’t know how much truth there is in the idea that the right side of the brain is all about creativity and synthesis, while the left side is logical and analytical, but it’s a useful metaphor, anyway. Here are some pictures that the right side of my brain was quite enjoying, until that pesky left-brain piped up. I see this

and my right brain is getting all excited about the texture, but my left brain sees my sweaters ruined by catching on the rough stone. (via) Or with this lovely photograph

I’m worrying about how to open the drawers and cabinets (a lot of touch-latches?), and I want to move that trash can. Here

I’m looking at the finger-pulls and wondering how the finish will hold up. (actually my right-brain has a few reservations on this one, too, but that would be a whole other post). Hey, thanks left brain, for spoiling all the fun!
