You’re probably well aware that there’s a bit of a “taxidermy” trend going on in interiors – I’ve being seeing heads of deer and other animals in all sorts of rooms. But I haven’t seen one of these until now:

Just right?

Just right?

Now that’s got to beat any dead animal decoration there is, right? This hungry visitor attempted to drop in on a group of scientists visiting Svalbard – they were preparing cauliflower soup, perhaps the bear is a vegan?

I won't go until I've got some ...

I won't go until I've got some ...

The photos of the bear, by Andy Rouse, are awesome. What with the disappearing sea-ice and the tough time the bears are having as climate warming changes the world around them, you can see that this fellow is really hungry.

Please?

Please?

But, come on guys, I really wanted to see more of that ship’s kitchen! (from The Daily Mail)

I don’t know how much truth there is in the idea that the right side of the brain is all about creativity and synthesis, while the left side is logical and analytical, but it’s a useful metaphor, anyway. Here are some pictures that the right side of my brain was quite enjoying, until that pesky left-brain piped up. I see this

and my right brain is getting all excited about the texture, but my left brain sees my sweaters ruined by catching on the rough stone. (via)  Or with this lovely photograph

I’m looking at the finger-pulls and wondering how the finish will hold up. (actually my right-brain has a few reservations on this one, too, but that would be a whole other post). Hey, thanks left brain, for spoiling all the fun!

The other day I was discussing the pros and cons of an  island in a long narrow kitchen with a client. Generally, I think if the best you can do is squeeze a 24″ wide island into a skinny room, you risk making the kitchen feel like  couple of  corridors, instead of a coherent space. But, like all rules, this one is probably made to be broken – at least in some cases:

This one’s really narrow, but at least it makes space for a real  seating area on the other side.  The layout is a little at odds with that lovely ceiling though, isn’t it? (via)

The next two photos show the island standing in for one wall of a galley kitchen – yes, the space outside the kitchen is just circulation, but when the kitchen is the link from one space to another, this works really well as a way to keep traffic out of the work area.  It’s well worth sacrificing the upper cabinets that could have been on that wall for this kind of open feeling, don’t you think? In the room below, this island is clearly where it is because of the windows.  It’s not a conventional layout, but I bet it’s a great space to cook in. (via) I guess I’ve just proved to myself that I don’t mind the kitchen being two corridors, as long as one of them leads somewhere, or has a great view.

Should I throw away my “rule” about skinny islands?

Here are some of the white kitchen pictures I collected on my recent cyber visit to  Finland. First a very clean lined, white on white kitchen.  (via Krisu)

White on white kitchen

White on white kitchen

That much white in a kitchen design makes it very pure, almost clinical – especially as the glass backsplash and the cabinet fronts are smooth and glossy – not even grout lines or cabinet pulls to provide some contrast. Lovely to look at, but perhaps hard to live with? Of course white is the perfect backdrop for lively accessories and individual touches, things that are much easier to change than the kitchen finishes.

Another white, contemporary kitchen, but this time warmed by the wood floor and the red accents – again the backslash is a cool color, but this time we have the texture of tile. And some cabinet pulls too.  It’s definitely a warmer, more welcoming kitchen design.

And last, a more transitional look – still plenty of white, but now we have  routed detail on the doors, and rich wood counters and toekicks that echo the colors in the rest of the house. I like the detail of the textured backsplash too. This look really reminds me of a yacht galley kitchen, although wood counters can be a problem around a sink, they are going to require plenty of  maintenance, even if they are a naturally oily wood like teak. A real galley kitchen

A galley kitchen to dream of. This is the galley of Fat Boy Slim’s yacht (sailboat if you prefer) Barracuda. Isn’t the styling gorgeous? They must have to arrange things rather differently when they are actually at sea.  (All pictures via style-files.com)

A great galley kitchen

Jul 19, 2009

greatgalley

I’m in the mood for happy today, so here is a beautiful galley kitchen from thekitchn.com. Don’t you just love the sunny feeling, and the retro accents in the traditional setting? Check out more pictures here.  I approve of the the hidden microwave, though if you use it more often, an open shelf in the same location might be easier.  Definitely one to lust after!
