Wednesday Windows
I guess it must because I’m contrary by nature – I love to see ranges under windows, just because we are so often told that is the one place they should never be.
A good reason for never saying never – this Oxfordshire kitchen. The two windows frame the hood nicely, the ventilation is placed squarely over the Aga gas module where it is needed, leaving a window behind the warming module to bring views from outside and natural light to the cooking area.
And did you see this glorious kitchen by Miller Hull featured at the Contemporist?
A closer look at the range reveals (dah dah daah) it has a window for a backsplash. And with these views why on earth not?
To be precise, it looks as if there is a clear glass backsplash fixed over the window – no danger of untimely breezes, and easy to keep clean. Of course the glass would have to be sufficiently heat safe. The biggest danger for me would be becoming so mesmerized by the scene I’d forget all about the cooking!

Hi Joseph – it is stunner, isn’t it?
Hi Dublin – you are right of course, but glass is at least easy to clean, and you can stick to “green” products and still get great results. A lot easier in the long run than tile with texture and grout lines to worry about, or stone that has to be sealed and resealed…
Lucy – thanks for stopping by – that sounds gorgeous. I agree with you, these days with dishwashers that do not require the dishes to be washed first, I can’t believe that we really spend the majority of hour time at the kitchen sink. Why not cook with a view if you can?
We recently renovated our kitchen and put our range in front of a very large picture window. I love it there because I spend more time at my range than at my sink, so it is a better placement for me to enjoy the view! (Although it is not as good as the spectacular view from the second kitchen you posted…)
Holy smokes, what a kitchen! I would be most happy to move right in and never change a thing. And if that window gets some kitchen grease on it from time to time, hey, that’s what Windex is for!
The only real issue I would have with this is keeping the windows clean. You would obviously get oil splashes from cooking so blinds would be a no no. It is funny how the majority of people still think a sink has to go in the window, I much prefer having them in the island if possible.
