Terminally indecisive tile design

08.17.2010 · Posted in Baths, Kitchens

Here’s a backsplash trying to be several different backsplashes at the same time:

Layers and layers

Seems the designer (I use the word in its broadest possible sense) couldn’t quite make a decision. There’s  granite, slate, tumbled travertine mosaic (with pewter accents), and slate again.  Whew – just one of those selections would have done the job (via).

Although this bath splash displays perhaps a similar level of indecision, it is way more fun:

All mixed up - via Living etc

I’m sure there is nothing random at all about this mix of styles, shapes, patterns and periods – unified by the white/blue/green color palette, and contrasted with the puritanical simplicity of the white walls and tub, it really works.  That you should have fun with the backsplash is one of my design mantras – I love to see it carried out so thoroughly.

  1. Perhaps there was a sample sale? “No two tiles the same!”

  2. A bit of exuberance every now and then is a good thing, I think!

  3. I agree completely on the first example you cited. As for the bathroom one… I think it may be a bit too exuberant for my tastes, but it does seem to be going in the right direction. For some people, not me so much.
