Italian kitchens – muratura
I learned a new word today – muratura. Well, OK, muratura is Italian for masonry, so if I was fluent in Italian, it would not be nearly so new. Such a lovely word to describe this traditional kitchen style, where the cupboards, drawers and shelves are set into masonry elements, sometimes decorated with ceramic tile, and sometimes simply plastered or painted:
Not what we typically have in mind when we think of Italian kitchen design, is it? Or is it?

Hi Nicole – and thanks for visiting – you took some great pictures. I think this “muratura” style can be quite clean and contemporary, too – though not so much in these pictures
I was at the Westye F. Bakke Center (Sub-Zero/Wolf) last week and was enamored with a DeGuilio presentation kitchen there that used elements (end panels or fillers of sorts) that mimic this look in a really simple way, combined with stainless steel and wood cabinetry. Where my tastes lean more modern, it looked incredible. You can see a close-up on my blog (www.enzyliving.blogspot.com) and Paul Anater has some great photos of the same space on his blog as well.
