Almost a vacation – sunny southern kitchens

08.02.2010 · Posted in Kitchens

Here we are, it’s August, and if we were French, there’s a good chance we’d all be fleeing the city right now for a dreamy Summer vacation. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been slaving all weekend over spreadsheets, and the idea of a few weeks in the South of France is particularly appealing by contrast. Well, I can’t make the vacation happen for you, but here’s a little burst of  French accented sunshine for your Monday morning:

Côté Sud

Côté Sud

Côté Sud

Côté Sud

Bernard Touillon for Côté Sud

That was almost as good as three or four weeks by the Mediterranean, wasn’t it? Well, perhaps not, but it’s the best I could do. Sometimes I can’t help thinking the Puritan work ethic is highly overrated.

  1. True – doesn’t stop me dreaming. I spend most of my brief time on Maui at a particular beach surrounded by Swiss, French, German, British, and even Canadian people who were staying for 3, 4, or even 6 weeks. I read just yesterday that the French are the most productive workers (per hour of work) in the world (can’t remember where, can’t swear it’s true). I’m sure the fact that they work fewer hours than anybody else explains it. I’m all for balance, and I think we Americans could learn from these others. We might be “richer” on paper, but we are missing out on much of the true richness of life.

  2. C’mon, Sarah, you just got back from HAWAII for heaven’s sake! How bad can it be? (lol) I do like the idea of a slower pace of life, though. I think Europe, France in particular, has the right on this. As Gandhi said, “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”
