So much to do, so little time…
Just a few of the many things you could get involved in in Maui this week – if only there were more hours in the day:
Since I’m on vacation, I really haven’t though about kitchens this week at all. Instead, here’s another coffee shop discovery – Wailuku Coffee Company on Market Street in downtown Wailuku. It’s only been open a few weeks, but it’s a cool and comfortable spot to relax, and I can recommend the espresso poured over local ice -cream (affogato):
The thing I like about Wailuku is how it seems more like a real town, where real people live and work, than many places on Maui – though of course it can’t be all that real, or I wouldn’t be there.
On Market Street there are antique stores and pawn shops, vintage clothes, a few galleries, and a record store worthy of High Fidelity, mixed in with all sorts of local businesses – surrounded by tropical vegetation and huddled under the spectacular peaks of Hale Mahina. Although Wailuku means “waters of destruction” – named for battles fought in the area between chiefs of Maui and the forces of Kamehmeha from Hawai’i, which left the streams clogged with the bodies of defeated Maui men – I highly recommend it for some low-key, relaxed time off the beaten tourist path.

Isn’t Kauai gorgeous? Yes, most of us just go to Hawaii to be there (just breathing the air is a tonic) – but if you live there then you probably need to do something, occasionally!
Hawaai’s not really a place people go to DO things, so much as to just BE THERE. We went to Kauai on our 25th anniversary and loved every minute of it. There really wasn’t much to do on the island, but that was just fine with us. Being there was sufficient to our needs!
