Just go there …

07.11.2010 · Posted in Color, Weekend Escapes

I couldn’t resist these stunning photographs – the work of photographer Michael Eastman (who’s work was featured in the Summer 2010 issue of ARTNews).  This is architecture with an eerie quality – stunning spaces, strangely empty, and luminous, guaranteed to make you wish you were there:

I’ve been thinking about tiled floors lately, especially cement tile, so I was struck by the beautiful floors in many of the images, from Memphis to  Havana and back to Venice:

Michael Eastman, Grid Museum, Venice

And then of course, there’s the stunning saturated color. Mr. Eastman doesn’t seem to be too passionate about kitchens, (why isn’t everybody?) – but here is a haunting one, from Havana:

It’s a beautiful body of work – just go to the Eastman Images website and feast your eyes.  The site lists three chances to see his work at exhibition this year – in Santa Fe, Miami, and Paris. If it were possible, I’d certainly buy the book.

  1. Hi Joseph – blessing counting is always a good activity for Monday morning, isn’t it? Not a great kitchen by our rich-world standards, but much better than a solar stove in a refugee camp, for instance… I’m sure the exuberance of the color says something about our human capacity for optimism – and blessing counting

  2. Lord, that kitchen from Havana… I’ll tell you, sometimes you really have to just count your blessings. Our present kitchen leaves a lot to be desired, but to think of the poverty that has created a kitchen like that one… Wow. I’m starting my day rather late, but no matter how the day turns out, I know it will be an excellent one, for no other reason than an accident of birth. Man, does that picture put things in perspective!
