Ancient and Modern
There’s a real art to putting a contemporary kitchen in ancient surroundings. Here are striking examples of modern kitchens in grand old buildings in France – just look at the walls in this farmhouse in the Pyreneees:
Isn’t that a perfect setting – the Lloyd Loom chairs, the rug, the table – everything has to be strong to work with walls like that. With it’s workmanlike simplicity, this modern kitchen looks tough enough for it’s rugged setting. I see the Tolomeo lighting trend has crept into the kitchen here too:
From farmhouse to castle – slightly more refined perhaps, but these walls are still the real thing:
The warm modern kitchen complements the architecture surprisingly well, without competing for attention:
I guess castles don’t have to be opulent, after all – you can be king of the castle, and a modernist too.

I don’t know that I would care to live in these places, but I do like the mixture of old and new.
