Silver Travertine

05.19.2010 · Posted in Baths, Kitchens

I’m really liking striated travertine lately (see it in this post, and here). Today I want to give a big  thank you to Steph, who writes the Granite Gurus blog, for setting me on the hunt for silver travertine. Here’s a gorgeous example, all the way from Brazil:

Silver Travertine - cool in the kitchen

Clearly, silver travertine is not always very silver – but its soft stripes are what I really like about it:

Here the effect is more wind-blown sand, or ocean waves:

Just like this lovely photograph – wind blown sand and ocean water for real, isn’t the analogy perfect? (via)

And of course, if I’m associating travertine with beaches, we have to include Stone Forest’s curvaceous chaise:

What’s really funny is that I’ve been thinking that silver travertine would be the perfect stone for my entry way – then I looked more closely at the madly 1958 stone that’s already on one wall and the floor, and realized that some of it is already silver travertine. It’s laid out in a crazy paving random pattern, so I don’t get the cool effect of the oh-so-sophisticated stripes.  Sad, isn’t it, that I’ve lived with that stone for so long without even recognizing it?

Hi Steph – of course it’s cool, thanks for the hint, and for visiting. Ooh, now I need to hop over to your blog to see if you’ve ended the suspense…

  2. Sarah, I’m so glad you like the Silver Travertine….I had a feeling you would! :)
The pictures you found are amazing! Great post, I loved it. Is it cool if I link back to this post when I write about Silver Travertine?

Hi Joseph – thanks for stopping by – I rather like the effect of the slightly offset patterns from the tiles, though I can see the other way is more organic. Wouldn’t want to give anyone a headache!

  4. It’s probably just the woodworker in me, but I much prefer the examples in which the installers matched up the grain of the travertine to give it the appearance of a solid sheet spread over the entire wall or object. The pictures where they just have the tiles set in a sort of jumbled pattern give me the heeby jeebies! If I lived with a room like that, I would end up with such a headache!
