Corian, Karim Rashid and Sci-fi Soft Geometry
The Corian booth at KBIS2010 had some great new demonstrations of what can be done with this frequently disparaged material, like this curved drawer front:
Check-out Cheryl at Kitchen Details and Design for her entertaining Corian write-up from Chicago, with many more great pictures, here.
Great though it was, the Chicago booth was totally tame compared with what DuPont came up with for Milan design week in April:
Yes, that’s right, they let Karim Rashid loose on an entire Corian kingdom. The Smart-ologic Corian Living exhibit is soft-geometry on steroids – a vision of a curvilinear future complete with kitchen:
and of course bathroom:
and just to complete the scene, Mr. Rashid even has a Star-Trek style transporter right there in the master bath:
Though he should know that if he doesn’t let that young lady out soon, her matrix is sure to destabilize ….
The Smart-ologic Corian Living exhibition continues until June 15th 2010, so there’s still time to nip over to Milan and see it (especially if you have a transporter too). These images and many more via The Contemporist.

Hi Zoe – the man is certainly prolific! Wish I had heard the talk. I suppose this particular installation is more about inspiration than real life – designer playtime?
Very cool on the one hand, but who lives like this? Sometimes I think Karim Rashid has watched too many Jetson episodes. I did see him speak last week and I thought he said some really thought provoking and intelligent things.
