A little kitchen retreat

05.17.2010 · Posted in Kitchens, Random thoughts

A kitchen is so much more than a place to cook. They can be the center of a whirl of activity on busy family days. The very best kitchens also offer a place to sit, just outside the hustle and bustle, and catch a few moments of conversation, or just peace and quiet.

This kitchen has a lovely little sitting area just adjacent. Only the dog is taking advantage of it right now – do you think he looks a little guilty?

I’m guessing that dogs  are welcome on this casual sofa at Rose Villa:

But perhaps not so much on this more elegant window seat – a well behaved cat might be acceptable:

The kitchen doesn’t have to be big to make room for a window seat – it can be a great place for children to sit and read, and their books and toys can be stored inside:

This bench incorporated into the end of the island is a clever, space-saving idea – though not as welcoming as some of the others, it could be used as extra seating for the table, too:

This generous seating area has been created by the removal of a breakfast nook – it reminds me of an old fashioned box bed, and could easily be a whole fantasy world for the children of the house:

This last one is definitely big enough for an adult or two to sleep on – and really not practical for seating at all:

There are certainly days when a spot to nap in the kitchen seems like a good idea – but I’d want it to be a bit more inviting than this.

  1. Ah, that this me back to my childhood in Helena, Montana. We had a very modest house there that was built sometime around the 1880s. My father was a carpenter and jack-of-all-trades, and over the ten years we lived there (from ages 5 to 15 for me), he remodeled it quite a bit. Whenever he tore out a wall, the nails we’d come across were square!

But the absolute best part of that house for me was the bay window in the living room. It had a window seat inside, and as a small boy I used to sit in it and read books. In the beginning, I was so small that I could actually sit on a stool in front of the window seat and use the seat for a table. I used to do my homework there sometimes.

As an adult in San Diego, I designed and built a window seat for our living room, but, much as I like the design of it and so forth, in memory yet green, I yearn for that perfect window seat in those long ago halcyon days when I first learned about the wonder that is books.
