Table Tuesday
There is an important difference between a kitchen table, and a dining table that happens to be in a kitchen. Here’s a fine kitchen table, ready to take whatever is thrown at it:
As it seems to be at counter height, rather than table height, strictly speaking it might be considered more of a work island than a table, I suppose.
This next one is more of a dining table to my mind. And in this very beautiful tailored kitchen, that may be its primary purpose. The table looks rugged enough, it’s just the dainty upholstered chairs I take issue with – not bad in themselves if you like that sort of thing, but definitely not something you’d want to get your bread dough onto. I swore off upholstered chairs for my own kitchens about 20 years ago, unless they are slip-covered and washable (no coincidence that my firstborn child is now twenty):
If you want to be a little dressy, and you don’t mind frequent laundry, slip-covers are a good choice:
However elegant the slip-covers, my preference in the kitchen is always for the easy, wipe-clean solution. Here’s one of my favorites, a Regency style table that wouldn’t look out of place in the grandest dining room, along with classic mid-century chairs that make it practical in a kitchen setting too. It’s lovely how the form of the Arne Jacobsen Series 7 Chairs harmonizes with the table legs – eclecticism done right. (via)

Cheryl, me too. I’d have to build a whole new house to fit that table into. Maybe one day….
Hi Kate – lots to like there, you are right, beign able to pick the stools up and move them about is super-important
Oooh love the last kitchen! I am kind of a table freak and lamp freak. Kind of an issue considering we live in 1800 sq ft. At least I have some more space at work coming soon!
Wow, great selection of photos!
The harvest table in #1 is to die for, but my favorite photo is #3: wall cupboard w/ sliding glass doors; white (reproduction?) ceramic casters on butcher block; (linen?) slip covers on metal stools, with holes so the stool can still be picked up as intended. Brilliant.
