Oh yes you can have the range under the window
You can, but you might not want to. I found this picture at Houzz, I believe it was originally published at Apartment Therapy. In what category I wonder – maybe best kitchen cobbled together from found objects and put into a space not really designed to be a kitchen.
I do understand, really I do, that we can’t all have our dream kitchen. I’ve lived with a few horrendous rented kitchens myself, too. But why would you publish something as inconvenient as this? That window is this room’s best feature, but not with the ugly range bang in-front of it. Yes, you can improvise with vintage furniture instead of kitchen cabinets, but at least for safety’s sake choose something for right next to the range that is not taller than the range. A table lamp could help light your work-space, but a fabric shade over-hanging an unvented gas range? I don’t think so. And then there’s the floor. I really hope it was never intended to be black and white, and I don’t want to think about what has made it this color if it was. Hint – if your floor is grimy cream, don’t put white-white dog bowls (or anything else) on it – they’ll make it look even dirtier.
Nice table and chairs though – at least there’s a good spot to sit while you hunt through the classifieds for a place to live that does have a kitchen.
.

Francois – yes, in desperation we sometimes put microwaves under counters, but they are really not designed to be used at that height….I have a blog post coming up on that very subject.
And what is that tiny oven to the left of it? A microwave? What an odd height. They wouldn’t need the lamp on if they hadn’t put a range in front of the window. Start again!
Bozena – mud soup, I love the idea! It does look like a big room doesn’t it. I wonder where the sink is?
Oh, Kate, LOL!
The window is really the most attractive feature in this room, why not to block it completely? And I love the flower pot on the window above the range – if you want to cook a mud soup with addition of some dry flower arrangement
Seriously: this kitchen is big enough to make it functional (and clutter-free).
Rich, Kate – we can only hope Kate is right. Before something – whether a remodel or a major kitchen fire, before something
Maybe this is a “before” photo?
What a scene! The idea of looking at the back of that range from outside the window makes me cringe; the nether side of a stove is not a pretty sight from any perspective, especially showcased in an exterior. The blooming branch looming into the room is interesting also. I especially like the leather couch (cook’s chair?) pulled up to the table setting. Really makes you wonder what lurks in the balance of this collage dwelling…
