Kitchen Clarity Adventures in Kitchen and Bath Design

Lighten up

Yesterday I had the good fortune to attend a lecture by lighting guru Randall Whitehead – he’s a great entertainer as well as a supremely knowledgeable designer, if his books aren’t already in your library they should be.  It would be impossible to distill the entire talk into one little blog post, but today  I’d like to share just a few of his sources for fixtures that look stunning and make use energy efficient lamps. In all these fixtures the light source is hidden, so you can use fluorescent lamps and they won’t draw attention to themselves.  Of course, select lamps with a color temperature of about 2700K   to ensure a warm light, and being energy efficient becomes effortless as well as beautiful.

You may have seen these beautiful handmade Birch&Willow fixtures on Oprah – what a brilliant way to introduce a organic texture into your space. Hand made by true artisans in Boston – I’m saving up for some of these, or perhaps it could be another of my DIY attempts?

Check out Dave Meeker Art for absolutely stunning lighting using LED lamps and everyday objects, like drinking stores and coffee stirrers:

Aren’t they surprisingly beautiful? Now I’m torn between the twiggy organic look and the ethereal high-tech plastics – what do you think?

Or I could just steal a bird’s nest? I have a feeling it is a lot harder to do than it looks! Though if a pair of pea-brain sparrows can do it…
