Green the golden tree of life
“Gray, young friend, is all theory; and green the golden tree of life” – so says the demon Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust -
Grau, theurer Freund, ist alle Theorie, Und grün des Lebens goldner Baum
So should we avoid the temptations of the devil, and stick safely to gray? Not today – let’s go with some wonderful shades of green, invoking everything from the deepest forest shadows to sunlit meadows and dry summer grasses:
This surreal loft kitchen in New York (via) belongs to artist Maria Abramovic – different shades of green in a translucent cube at the heart of the apartment. She never cooks in it, and she has that gorgeous Artemide light fixture too – I’m turning quite green myself:
Most of today’s kitchens stick to one or two shades of green each:
Some actually combine the gray and the green – see how well the right greens work with classic gray and white carrara marble:
Green and golden is one of my favorite combinations – not least because it reminds me of Dylan Thomas’ Fern Hill. Or perhaps the poem reminds me of the colors, I don’t know, but read it and you’ll see:
As a child I remember being told “blue with green should never be seen” – an admonishment against wearing the two colors together. A rule I still don’t understand. Here they are together, both with a sunny touch of yellow to them – I see Fern Hill here too, the “sky blue trades” as well as the “green and golden”:
And on to green and copper – and of course all the soft browns and creams, a classic natural combination, and very easy to live with. Isn’t that backsplash just awesome?
I’m not quite sure what’s got into me with all the poetry today – I hope it means I’m going to have a super-successful creative week. Happy Monday!

Yvonne – It’s so rich and yet calming, isn’t it? Like fields of buttercups.
Green and golden pic is my favourite
Hi Erin – yes it is a beauty, isn’t it? I could definitely live with that one, if I had to
Hi Rich – weird, huh? I did grow up in a village with more sheep than people, probably the advice came from one of those ancient dowagers who only ever wore tweed or navy blue.
I have that same kitchen bookmarked (the top one) — it’s a stunner. And that Remodelista kitchen is lovely. Modest but interesting.
What? Blue with green should never be seen?
Apparently my childhood admonitions were sold short – I’ve never heard that particular bit of balderdash. Tell it to the Caribbean: the color combinations there are so perfect with the aquas, turquoise, lime, sky, moss, ferns, jungle, (let’s not forget Blue Curacao)…
