A Scottish Retreat

How about this for a bathtub? Despite the modern plumbing, it could be the least inviting tub I’ve seen in a long time:

Austerity in Scotland

Stone Reflected

I absolutely adore the tiny window in the massive wall – the idea of sitting in the tub throwing what, lavender bubble bath, down on invaders is quite appealing.  But I imagine it would take an awful lot of awfully hot water to  take the chill off that stone tub.

The location, in a 15th century Scottish keep, ought to be wildly romantic – though definitely tending towards grimness:

Defensive Architechture

To be fair, a lot of it has been updated, at least as far as the 18th century:

Throne Room

And the kitchen has made it to the early 20th:

Ancient and almost Modern

At least one room will be really warm with that Aga purring away.

Kitchen Sink

What a place – not quite a seaside cottage, but it would certainly make a memorable retreat, sure to stir up all kinds of creativity. And it has one of those spiral staircases, designed so that one man (or woman) with a sword can defend it against infinite numbers of Campbells, MacDonalds, whoever  – there are definitely days when I could make use of that.  (More images here)

  1. It does look a bit grim, doesn’t it. Though if you click on the link you’ll see that some of the other rooms are a lot more inviting.

  2. I’m a real history buff, so I would welcome the opportunity to tour a place like this, but I cannot imagine spending even so much as a single night in it. Too old, too antiquated, too spooky.
