When the hipsters are your people
Do you follow The Unhappy Hipsters? You should – a great way to get a smile out of modern design and architecture. This poor pooch made me think of the hipsters, and their innocent victims, dreaming of grass and open spaces. There are so many of these glass boxes used as kitchen extensions behind typical narrow Victorian houses – this one appears to fill in the space between two older homes in lovely Richmond. While I can see it’s a good way to gain interior space, I think back to the Victorian house I lived in when my kids were small, and all the hours we spent in its long, shady, hidden garden, and I wonder if it wouldn’t be better to keep some of that garden, not to mention some of that Victorian character. I suspect that dogs are not naturally modernists:

Hi Kate – actually, I think those houses on Richmond Hill are Georgian, it’s a wonder they found any space to do this. Here’s a Google view of the street http://bit.ly/bwsrY5. Fortunately for our doggy friend, this house seems to be just a stone’s throw from both Richmond Park and Petersham Meadows, perhaps he’s more pooped with exhaustion than bored to tears. We were living in Kingston, just the other side of the park, when my kids were born – back then, I dreamed we’d end up in one of the houses backing on to the park (when our mythical boat came in), not in a 1958 California rancher. Life is full of surprises. Now I’m going to google the houses we lived in then….
I’ve seen this photo before. (Unfortunately.)
We can only hope this was one of those Victorians that had been remodeled beyond redemption in the 50s, 60s or 70s and that there was no point to even trying to preserve or restore anything.
And if ever a dog belonged in front of an AGA, it’s that dog.
