Unidentified kitchen objects

03.18.2010 · Posted in Kitchens

Can you help me here? I came across this picture in a collection of galley kitchens a little while ago.  The more I look at it the more confused I am – what are those clamp like things on that left hand counter? Are they instruments of torture, possibly?

The Modern House

The strange thing is I have a feeling in the back of my mind that I should recognize them. My brain is making connections with sea food – cracking giant crabs, perhaps? Or maybe it’s a faint memory from that alien abduction episode … I really would be grateful for any enlightenment!

  1. Could be worse, true – but it’s still not pretty

  2. Clean up would be easier. And lots of elbow room for 2 cooks. Could be worse, I guess.

  3. Hi Darla – yes ugly, impractical. If it is a commercial kitchen I wouldn’t like to eat what it produces.

  4. Dear Richard, Anne, Darla, Ann, Paul, Kate, MC and Que – thank you,all you smart people – I knew there had to be an answer! They certainly had me confused – glad to know they’re not for dismembering anything. This place does look more commercial than home comfort, doesn’t it.

  5. Definitely gas burners – witness the blue flex lines coming from the stopcocks at the back of the work surface. A very odd setup – looks a lot like a sort of commercial kitchen – see the control panel at the end of the counter in question, the exhaust grates in the dropped valance oveerhead, the extra wide drawers under the “cooking” top. I’m thinking some sort of catering/foodwarming area, sheet pans, etc.

  6. Looks like a lab set up, not a kitchen set up. Looks like a variation on a bunsen burner – a school room gas jet.

    Love the site!!!

  7. What on earth were they thinking??? And what on earth are they cooking there???? That’s got to be the ugliest solution for a cooker I’ve EVER seen, not to mention unbelievably impractical. Is this really in a house? If so, it’s so horrible, it’s actually hilarious! And good luck keeping those tiles and all that grout clean…

  8. I agree with the group that they are gas burners. I can’t imagine balancing a large pot on them. What if it was tipped over – Yikes!

  9. Count me as another gas burner vote. I hope that counter is heat proof!

  10. Me three. I think they’re individual gas burners.

  11. I thought burners as well as I didn’t see a cooktop…

  12. They look like individual gas cooktop burners to me…
