Tucked under the staircase

03.25.2010 · Posted in Kitchens

Sometimes tight spaces are the most fun – how sweet is this, tucked in under the stairs? (via The Kitchen Designer)

Using every inch - charmingly

and here’s a dainty little kitchen -  the staircase has even been notched to accommodate the tall cabinet – tight quarters indeed, but everything you need is there: (via Coastal Living)

Everything in its place and nothing extra

Check out this post at  PamDesigns for a detailed look at some of the challenges of small kitchens. Just by forcing us to edit and be selective, small spaces often produce the most creative solutions, and they can be very satisfying to design.

  1. But isn’t that why we like them? We don’t walk into a room and say – oh what a lovely low ceiling, do we! But solar panels, we all need those – and the technologiy is getting better (more cost effective) all the time

  2. True… but… 12′ Victorian ceilings as opposed to 8′ modern ceilings means 50% more volume. It’s a lot of cubic feet to heat & cool, especially in a climate that requires one or the other year-round. My biggest kitchen expense may need to be solar panels!

  3. Oh I don’t know – small is satisfying, but too much space is a good quality problem to have if you must choose :)

  4. I *love* the beaded inset cabinets in the top photo. (Also love the vidrio soplado goblets, the majolica pitchers, the copper faucet, and the bubble glass in the doors.)

In the second photo, is the baby AGA cream or another color? Next to the white it almost looks like honey. Looks nice with floor.

Funny you should post something about small kitchens — I spent most of today asking myself if I really need 550 sq-ft of kitchen & butler’s pantry. I’ve cooked some fine meals in much smaller kitchens.

Guess I better go read PamDesigns blog, huh?
