The dark side of Scandinavian design
Those exasperatingly stylish Scandinavians can do ugly too – and when they do, they do it really well:
Let’s not mention the lovely vinyl wrapped toe-kick in the kitchen. Don’t you just love the avocado seat on the white toilet? If only it were the right size. It’s a good thing the vase of fake flowers is there – this powder room might not be flowery enough without them.
What do you think – time to tear it out, or keep it, because something this ugly is bound to become trendy alternative chic any minute now?
.

Hi Francois – Orla has been getting some stick here, but I don’t believe we can hold her responsible for the wallpaper – and definitely not for the ill-fitting avocado toilet seat
I adore Orla Kiely and pattern generally. Its fun to have a way out vision and put it out there for everyone to see. If it is a vision that is, and not a nightmare.
ouch! But I have to agree with Raina…over Orla in a big way. The scando designo thing has run it’s course unless you choose an element and put a new spin on it..however, I do have two vintage scandinavian chairs..that with JUST the right fabric will become the new scando designo fave in my house! Of course,,,have yet to find the right fabric.
Euro-plebian? Uh, oh, I think that’s me. If I do discover any delicious gossip, you’ll be the first to know
I clicked over from your tweet thinking I would find some delicious gossip about the evil ways of a Nordic designer named “Sven.”
But this is good, too.
I’m not a fan of most mid-century Scandinavian design, too Euro-plebeian for my tastes. I’ll be glad when the fad passes and Orla Kiely goes out of business.
