The colors of Spring

03.15.2010 · Posted in Color, Kitchens

There’s no question nature has all the best color palettes. Well, probably nature has all the color palettes, full stop. But the acid green and yellow accents in this John Lewis of Hungerford kitchen are the exact colors of Spring here in Northern California:

Chartreuse accents

It may not be officially Spring yet, but it certainly feels like it. The wild mustard is flowering everywhere, and the euphorbias in my garden are exploding with chartreuse, yellow and even orange:

Exuberant color - naturally

I started collecting euphorbias about 10 years ago – these Spring ones are among my favorites, they’ve been known to stop passing dog walkers in their tracks. And they seed themselves and spread like weeds, making them ideal plants for me, although I’m not sure if my downwind neighbors are quite as happy with them:

Manzanita for contrast

Inside the kitchen the same colors crop up in my excessive and disheveled collection of Mid Century cups and saucers (sadly they don’t seed themselves). I have favorite cups for different types of tea, moods, and times of day – like the euphorbias they are eminently practical and they make me happy:

Nature's colors

But the real point of this post is yellow, yellow green and even some yellow orange accents in the kitchen, echoing the colors I’m seeing everywhere outside  – so here goes:

I see manzanita here, too - Violet Designs

A little yellow - via Design Crisis

... or a lot - Jon Lum via Desire to Inspire

Bold and beautiful - Bobbie Burger via Design Sponge

Yellow cabinets and neutral backdrop - Real Living

The colors in this design are even more exuberant than in the euphorbias – even I would have to draw the line here:

Woah - a little too much acid

That’s too strong for my taste  – I’ll leave you with Spring in Northern California and the wild mustard, you might need some soothing after that last kitchen! Happy Monday!
