Kitchen design – the best job in the world?
I’m in that obsessive phase of a kitchen design right now, where all the pieces suddenly fall into place, and almost everything else in life gets neglected. The kitchen I’m working on is going to have one of these:

LaCanche Cluny
and one of these:

Big Chill Refrigerator
How much fun is that! This is one lucky little kitchen. It has its challenges, of course, don’t they all? Not least that it is a 12′ by 12′ room in a historic brick home, with no less than 4 doors and 3 windows to work around. But we all love something to get our teeth into, don’t we? I am so happy that my lovely client knows that the layout is the most important thing, and we can worry about colors and finishes after the fundamental decisions are made. And we have certainly made a lot of fundamental decisions this last week or two.
We know there are going to be open shelves – I’ve dredged up different images of open shelves from my archives for today’s post, just because my head is full of them anyway – and I’m happy to share:
And yes, we’ve discussed the extra cleaning issue – although I maintain that it is only really the topmost shelf that poses a major problem for dirt. Luckily there is a pantry for all the food storage, our shelves will be for all the pretty things. Don’t tell anybody, I’d hate to blow my cover, but sometimes this really is just the best job in the world.

Hi Amelia – nice to hear from you! They are very pretty, aren’t they – we shall see!
Hi Kate – but you wouldn’t change it for anything, would you? One of my early memories is a lath and plaster ceiling falling down on my brother’s head in the middle of the night – he had the top bunk, poor child! Likely we were both scarred for life.
Fancy brackets! I love them! Can’t wait to see this kitchen w/ or w/o them….
Welcome to my world of old plaster on brick walls, small rooms, and lots of doors & windows! I’m sure having lived in older homes helped you with this project. I hope you’ll add the finished results to your online portfolio.
I’m curious: did you & the client also look at Aga dual-fuel or La Cornue, and if so, why did LaCanche win out?
