Cook’s chairs
I’ve been hunting for that elusive cook’s chair again – I’ve always thought that a comfy place to sit with your cup of tea and a book right in the kitchen is such a great idea. Am I the only one who likes to read a few pages while my pot comes to a boil, or the oven comes up to its temperature, without actually leaving the room? Judging by the difficulty I’m having finding kitchens with the right sort of chair, perhaps I am …

I like the chair here, but I don’t fancy my chances with that range:

I really love this kitchen, in what was clearly never intended to be a kitchen in a Georgian house in London. There is a comfy sofa right there, but I think it’s more a case of a kitchen in the living room than a sofa in the kitchen:
Almost as good as a big squishy armchair, I think I could make do with a Windsor armchair in the kitchen – although this one is looking a little lost, right in front of that door:
I spy another Windsor chair in the corner here – warm and toasty by the Aga, that’s just about perfect:

Yes, space is nearly always the issue, really. But if you’ve got the space, that comfy chair is a great way to humanize the kitchen. I’d make it a higher priority than the second dishwasher, the extra refrigerator, the third oven, the huge island (if you can’t reach the middle, what use is it) that you sometimes see in grandiose large kitchens.
Good leather only gets better with age, and it’s easy to wipe down, so that wouldn’t be so bad. Still, we’re talking about 10 sq ft of space. That’s a pantry or broom closet!
And speaking of waiting for the kettle and a cuppa… have you seen all the great tea cozies/cosies out there? I decided I wanted one for my Brown Betty. I thought it was going to be hard to find one I would like. Au contraire! I had a terrible time deciding because I like too many of them. (I finally settled on the flowered cat from Ulster Weavers.)
Paul – that’s absolutely awesome. Is this going to be part of your KBIS gig?
I want you to know that I just did a series of kitchen designs for Google to use in a demonstration. Each an every one of them had a cook’s chair in an homage to the great Sarah Lloyd. Now about that range from Location Works…
Hi Kate -Yes, slip covers would be essential, wouldn’t they? Actually I have sworn never to buy anything upholstered but not slip-covered ever again in my life. Especially not for the kitchen. When I was a kid we had a really ancient battered leather wing chair that did kitchen duty – it was never beautiful, but it was functional.
That’s me, in the corner with my knitting and Long Island Iced tea while the youngsters party …
1 windsor chair and 4 barstools in the same kitchen? Odd sort of collision between cocktail parties and Granny or the cat. “You young people enjoy yourselves. I’ll just be in the corner here with my book and a cup of tea. Oh alright, I’ll have a Manhattan.”
An upholstered chair in the kitchen? Over time, wouldn’t it get too schmutzy w/ odors, grease, and such? A washable slipcover might be in order. Still, I would feel like I was using prime floor space for something with limited use. But an old harvest table with a couple of comfortable wooden chairs would be wonderful, and the chairs could be used for relaxing or shelling peas & shucking corn.
Thanks for sharing those photos. I *love* the Victorian range (not that I could cook on it either!)
