Australian Charm – Rubie’s Place Kitchen

03.26.2010 · Posted in Kitchens

Today I had the great pleasure to “meet” Tina, of the delightful blog Rubies Place, and to (metaphorically of course) visit her lovely kitchen in NSW, Australia. The kitchen the Rubies have created in their country town home is just my cup of tea. They did the design themselves, and put in a lot of hard work.

There is the simple kitchen table, crafted from an old desk top:

The perfect place for that cup of tea

Do you see the old inkwell? And a little reading bench for the children – I bet it’s great for toy and book storage too:

A special corner

There are hardly any upper cabinets, and with those lovely old windows it has a light and airy feeling – but still with plenty of warmth and comfort:

It was a 6 hour trip to buy the chandelier

Here, in her own words,  are Tina’s favorite things about the kitchen:

1. The cosy, warm feeling we get whenever we walk into the room. I love to sit at our table and have a cup of tea…

2. Our kitchen table. My darling hubby made this out of a vintage school desk he found buried under oil & paint cans in the shed when we moved in. I love the fact that he spent so much time cutting it down to fit and turning over the table top boards that were soaked in engine oil…You can still see the pencil grooves and inkwell holes. It fits our kitchen perfectly!!

3. My double range cooker that sits in the old chimney breast. I desperately wanted an AGA, but unfortunately the budget wouldn’t stretch to the $15000 !

4. Our chalkboard wall. Lottie spends many an hour drawing whilst I cook…best $14 I ever spent!

5. Our IKEA chandelier. We drove 6 hours each way to our nearest IKEA in Brisbane just to get that light..any excuse for a night in Brisbane! When will you start online ordering IKEA!!

6. My double drawer dishwasher that blends into the cabinetry

7. My butler sink and English taps….

8. and of course….my new 50c china cup tray!

If you want a better look at that priceless tray, and for more about Tina’s home and kitchen, be sure to check out the Rubies Place blog – it’s a treat!
