Dream kitchens in Italy

01.24.2010 · Posted in Kitchens

I’m sure I’ve mentioned my dream of living in an apartment in some absurdly romantic Italian palazzo in an earlier post. And I’m not particularly fussy about the palazzo itself, almost any one will do. But since I fell head-over-heels in love with Venice during three foggy days in the middle of Winter a few years ago, I think for now I’ll pick this one:

I'll take it

So having picked out the palazzo, one of the very first things I have to decide is what kind of kitchen it should have. The original kitchen would have been designed for a multitude of servants, and despite its obvious authenticity and a certain amount of charm, probably isn’t really going to work for me, even if I do win the lottery: (via)

Although I could tolerate many inconveniences in exchange for living in Italy, I really wouldn’t want to insult my palazzo by taking this bare bones, functional approach: (via)

I could certainly be tempted to recreate the kitchen as  a family gathering place, filled with traditional Italian elements: (via)

On second thoughts, I’m not convinced I want to take the whole family with me, this is my fantasy escape, not theirs  – so perhaps a more intimate scale: (via)

Or how about a simple contemporary kitchen, allowing the architecture to speak for itself? This picture is from the blog  Palazzo Pizzo, whose writers are already living my dream, restoring their very own southern Italian palazzo. Excuse me while I writhe with jealousy for a few minutes …

Simply Italian

They’re all good kitchens, but here’s the one that wins the starring role in my fantasy home  – via the blog Kikette Interiors.  A 21st century Italian kitchen in a 14th century Italian mansion – seven centuries of style in one room, really, how could you improve on that?

And if the whole family does insist on visiting, I’ll have no problem at all fitting them in – I’ll let you have just a glimpse of the grand salon:

Aah, such stuff as dreams are made on ...

All I need is that winning lottery ticket, and I’m there!

  1. I’ll second that

  2. Done! I’m planning to be in Rome in June if the stars align properly. Please stars, align.

  3. Maybe – I could swap you for the most amazing quirky antique filled apartment in La Serenissima. I so hope to get back there in Winter 2010/11.

  4. Do I need to dig out my photos of the kitchen in the villa in Sorrento where I stayed last year? It was the first time in my life that I didn’t turn up my nose at Ikea cabinetry. What’s inside the kitchen plays second fiddle to the fact that the kitchen itself is in Italy. It’s all uphill from there.
