Experimenting with Crystals
For the most part, I try to ignore the many “gift guides” that pop up all over the blogosphere this time of year – but I’m making an exception for these crystalline salt and pepper shakers suggested by Design Crisis

Wouldn’t that just be perfect, like a set of Russian nesting dolls? At 45 sq meters, the Reflections of Mineral house in Tokyo, by architect Yasuhiro Ymashita, is not so much bigger than a salt shaker itself (via). While the outside looks a little like a box, squished to fit into the available space, the light-filled interior is a lovely example of spare, minimal Japanese design, and makes great use of the unusual angles:

Rather than being outside the box, this design takes the box, twists and distorts it, and then has fun with the odd shaped spaces that result. And I’m sure it would almost fit under my Christmas tree ….
All it needs is Alice in Wonderland in the first shot, standing proudly outside her house. Or the White Rabbit scampering up the stairs.
