When is a door not a door? Translucent panels blur the division between open and closed storage

In this Manhattan kitchen (via OWI), translucent panels seem to blur the boundaries of the kitchen, too.

I know the theory, that the translucent panels give a sense of depth without revealing every detail of the clutter behind them, but they wouldn’t be my choice for a coat closet, especially if the coat closet was in the kitchen. What do you think?
Hi Paul, you’re right as usual
. It seems the translucence only looks good when the stuff behind the glass is architectural and beautifully arranged – in which case you might as well have clear glass or nothing at all. Is it just another refuge for the indecisive?
I understand the theory behind the translucence, but to me they are a big distraction. It’s kind of like trying to sleep with the TV on and the volume down. I can hear just enough to make me want to listen harder and therefore not be able to sleep. Translucent panels to the same thing visually. I can see just enough to make me concentrate harder. Maybe it’s just me, but this is one trend I’m going to let pass right by.
