Open shelves – some serious kitchens
There’s nothing that says “serious cook” better than a kitchen with open storage – everything in its place, but right in reach, too:

I’ve always admired Martha’s collection of copper pots over the island:

Here’s an example from Apartment Therapy, with the emphasis more on function than form:

This collection, via Living etc, looks practical, although it is definitely leaning in the “pretty” direction:

This kitchen (via) certainly looks like the domain of a real cook or two (and possibly an optometrist on the side):

This one (via) has an impressive array of knives – I’m too intimidated to say anything even faintly snide about the word on the wall:

A Very Serious Kitchen
So what do you think – do these people stay up late polishing the measuring cups? Or does a serious cook need a serious cleaning crew to keep everything sparkling?
Hi Francois – one man’s clutter is another man’s tastefully arranged array of essential tools? I like to keep mine well out of sight, whichever it is!
Dammit! I spent all that time designing a kitchen to hide the clutter behind doors, and now it appears I am not a proper cook. Perhaps we could squeeze in a few of those magnetic knife racks and some frying pans on the small bit of wall that remains…
Hi Rachele – I didn’t even notice that “catastrophe” – it is quite appropriate, isn’t it? I suspect everything is loaded onto the shelves for the photo opp rather than for real life, don’t you?
of course, I just noticed, the potholder on the left DOES announce “catastrophe.” LOL
I wonder if anyone actually uses the cooktop in the first photo. It even has a grill in that assumably jenn-air downdraft top. Not exactly the best spot for plastic food storage…
