Nicely Placed Microwave

11.03.2009 · Posted in Kitchens

Spotted this as I caught up with the blogosphere this weekend.  You’ve probably realized that the placement of the microwave oven in the kitchen is a minor obsession with me.  Here’s an example of microwave placement that I really like, from designer Steve Justrich via the Kitchn

Doesn’t that look good? Of course, this only works with a small microwave – you couldn’t do it with one of the extra deep convection micro combos. And you need to check the specifications to make sure you have the required air-space in the right place – sometimes you have to create an opening in the drywall behind or to one side.  The refrigerator is also nicely recessed into the wall in this kitchen – some really good thinking took place, check out all the pictures here.

  1. It is rather an obsession of mine, isn’t it? There are so many horribly placed ones, I’ll never run out of material. Those shelves are quite thick, and supported on 2 edges, probably with a dado and cleat at a guess – I think they’d be plenty strong enough for a small microwave

  2. I love your concern with microwaves in kitchens, it’s how I found your site by the way! This is a really good solution, but I do wonder how that shelving is so strong to hold the microwave up when there is no visible shelving supports?
