Fearful Symmetry

10.22.2009 · Posted in Kitchens

Symmetry is always present in interior design – it’s just a part of the language. Aren’t we always either making things symmetrical, or deliberately choosing asymmetrical balance instead? Sometimes, the symmetrical solution is the obvious one, and a little bit of work can lead to an asymmetrical balance which is  really more interesting. Other times, though, the symmetrical solution is the obvious one because it is just right. Here are a few kitchen photos from my scavenging where symmetry is the dominant principle – I’ve been looking for an excuse to post these (via spazioetempo, Plain English, flickr find – sorry lost the source, Joseph Dirand Architecture, and Location Works)

Don’t you just feel sort of safe and grounded after all that gorgeous symmetry? I guess there’s life in them there design principles, after all.

PS: You can see the kitchen and apartment that really inspired this post here – the axes (axises?) of symmetry in the space are so strong you could trip over them.  The entire MiresParis site is like a glorious visit to France, definitely worth browsing if you have some spare time. I know where I’ll be headed if I ever need to book a French location for a photo-shoot!
