Open shelves in the kitchen

What do you think about open shelves for storage in the kitchen?  This picture from nestdecorating shows how great an open shelf system can look. It does help if you have a good eye for accessories and how best to arrange them.

I love open shelves as a way to introduce personality into a kitchen. I think that almost anybody can take a ktchen and cover every available wall with cabinets.  Mixing closed and open storage is always much more interesting.

This second photo (via Materialicious) takes open storage to the extreme – there is nowhere to hide anything messy or unsightly here. I have to confess I would have trouble living like this!

Talking to clients, the biggest objection to open shelves is usually that they will gather dust.  This is of course why glass fronted cabinets were invented, and are so popular. Still, it is hard to beat the immediacy of having everything the cook could need instantly available on open shelving. What do you think?
