Classic color schemes – white and gray

How about some ethereal white and gray kitchens for today -  usually calm and and refreshing, always sophisticated.  Just what we need to calm us down as “back-to-school” encroaches on the heat of summer.

The texture of the tiny brick-pattern mosaic in the backsplash is the perfect foil to the glossy white cabinets and the smooth white counters – a contrast of texture rather than color.  Here is a kitchen where the extractor is made to disappear under a cabinet, rather than using a dramatic hood as a focal point.  Everything is understated here, see the tiny pulls and the thin counter tops? It all adds up to an atmosphere of elegance and restraint. (m.design)

Another lovely gray and white kitchen, from photographer Daniel Farmer under  the Creative Commons license.  The concrete counter is the perfect earthy shade, and the open shelves are a great way to frame the range hood. Notice how all the horizontals – hood canopy, shelves, counters, are of equal thickness. Contrast in materials, but repetition of form – then the lovely vertical of the hood for emphasis.  Works for me!
