The kitchen table revisited

Here is a beautiful kitchen table photo from the wonderful Plain English portfolio. I wanted to follow up my thought on kitchen tables – remember I asked why they have mostly been replaced by the kitchen island?

The two pictures here really answer that question for me – you need more space for a table than you do for an island.  At an island, you can stand to work, or you can sit on a stool, and the higher the stool, the less knee space is required.  And of course, an island can contain storage, or an additional sink, which the traditional table does not.

By pure serendipity, one of the posts over the weekend from  Apartment Therapy was all about the ways seating for eating and gathering can be squeezed into small kitchens – lots of great pictures to check out, as always!

I have chosen just one to show here, because it illustrates what would be my ideal.   There is room for two stools at the kitchen counter, but the table is close by and connected to the kitchen.  This gives you the best of all worlds – when a project or homework is spread out on the table, you can serve a quick tea or supper at the counter.   Alternatively, the stools allow a couple of guests to keep the cook company without disturbing a table setting. And I’m sure you could sit on those stools and sociably shell peas, share a cup of tea and a gossip, or whatever else you would like to do.
